The 2016-2017 school year will be near completion when you read the final edition for the year. The school year has certainly gone quickly. West Burlington Independent School District has had a great year with many accomplishments. Falcon pride is alive and well.

We are providing summer school once again this summer. If your student needs some additional help in one of his/her subjects or skills areas, I suggest contacting the building principal. The same goes for those of you who would like summer enrichment work. Please communicate with your students’ building principal to get the process moving forward.

There has been a lot of hoopla and misunderstanding in regard to the major changes to Chapter 20 and Chapter 279 of the Iowa Code. Chapter 20 outlines public employee’s rights to negotiate with management. Chapter 279 lays out regulations for contracts and other employment rights of public employees. Many of these laws are now changed. The good news is there will be few changes to employee relations for next year. We finalized an agreement with the teachers association just before the law came into effect. West Burlington Independent School District has no intentions of making huge changes in light of these changes. It will be business as usual; kids first! There are no plans for staff reductions or other drastic cost savings measures. WBISD will continue saving money when and where possible, but will always keep in mind we are here to serve our students and place their education as our number one priority. If you have specific questions or concerns, please contact me at (319) 752-8747, option #3 or If you simply want more information on the Chapter 20 and 279 changes feel free to contact me as well.

Please monitor the website, Facebook and other communication channels. We are changing registration for next school year. We are looking at a full online registration process for returning students. Those new to West Burlington ISD; we ask you register in person at the respective building that your student(s) will be attending. The in-person meeting will give you and your student a chance to look around the building, give us a chance to meet you, and complete the stack of paperwork required for first time registrants. We will monitor the effectiveness of online registration and make the necessary changes the next time around. We appreciate your patience as we work the potential bugs out. If you have questions or comments contact me.

I hope your students had a great school year. We appreciate the opportunity to provide them with top rate instruction along with a safe learning environment. We continue believing we are the school of choice in SE Iowa. Have a great summer and we look forward to seeing you in August. Go Falcons! Kids First!
