NOWe have not had the necessity of a snow day or even a late start so far this school year. If we do not have to cancel school this school year, our summer dismissal date is June 2, 2016. Cross your fingers hoping if we have snow or ice, it will be on a weekend.

West Burlington Independent School District is in the process of planning for next school year. One of the major planning tasks for another school year is the development of the school calendar. We cannot start any earlier than August 23rd. I would appreciate any input on the calendar as I work on drafting it. It is West Burlington Independent School District’s goal to approve the 2016-2017 calendar at the February 15th regular board meeting. I look forward to hearing from you.

West Burlington ISD has moved the February 12th early out professional development to February 10th. Students will be excused on the early dismissal schedule on February 10th and will have a full day of classes on February 12th. We apologize if this inconveniences any families. We believe the professional development opportunity for our staff is very important and made the value judgement of moving the early dismissal date.

Iowa Assessment Tests are quickly approaching and we are asking for your support and assistance. As we reported last month, West Burlington ISD is doing well in regard to our standardized testing and the State of Iowa Report Card. Our elementary school and junior high school received an acceptable rating and our high school is rated as commendable. We are all working together helping create an environment of improvement and collaboration. Simply put, working together creates positive results. Please speak with your son/daughter about the importance of doing his/her best on the Iowa Assessment Tests. We like to have good test results which make us look good, and our State Report Card makes us proud. The most important reason we want our students to perform their best on the tests is to give us an accurate measure and gauge the quality of instruction at each grade level and subject area. We use the results to plan for instructional improvement. Thanks for encouraging your son/daughter to work hard on his/her Iowa Assessment Test.

As West Burlington School District plans for next year I remind everyone the Open Enrollment deadline is March 1st. We do have grade caps for grades K-5. For the 2015-2016 school year; ten students were not allowed in due to our grade cap restrictions. We are appreciative of all the families that choose to attend West Burlington Schools. We hope your student is receiving a quality education in a safe, organized environment. Our board of education believes this to be the case.
