Hello West Burlington Independent School District stakeholders. This is the first installment for the 2015-2016 school year newsletter. I am sure our students will enjoy the extra two weeks of summer vacation precipitated by a later school start date. It will give our students and families more opportunity to vacation, swim, enjoy the sun, and eat an extra corn dog.

This newsletter edition has a wide array of information for new students and for those returning to West Burlington. Please read carefully noting when and where registration is being held, the times for open house, and of course, the first day of school. WBISD is in position to have another stellar school year.

I am honored to report our student achievement scores are looking good. Our elementary and high school Iowa Assessment scores rank first when compared with all of the schools in the Great Prairie AEA. Yes, I said first. Our junior high school achievement scores, our point of emphasis for improvement this school year, ranks in the top five in math, reading and science. We all should be very proud of how well our students are achieving. Thanks for your support of our academic programs. All of us working together is making a huge positive impact in our students’ educational development.

Our 2015 site visit from the Department of Education was a huge success. The site team was very complimentary of our professional development system, teachers, support staff, and most importantly, our students. The district will take the suggestions from the site team and make the necessary changes to make us even better. The achievement scores support the site team’s findings.

West Burlington ISD’s academics are excelling as well as our activities and athletics. Our fine arts program is excellent and our athletics continue to get even better. As we all know, our record setting boys track team won our first team State championship last spring. WBISD recognizes academics and activities help develop a well-rounded student. The best news in all of this is we are a very successful school and our financial position continues to improve. Our solvency ratio is at an all-time high.

The West Burlington ISD Board of Education wishes our new families a gracious welcome, and our returning families and warm welcome back. We have a great school, but recognize we are not perfect. There are occasional bumps in the road. We encourage our stakeholders with concerns to follow proper protocol when addressing problems. The only time a concern should be raised with the board is when all options have been exhausted. Consult board policy, the building handbook, or the superintendent with questions on how to address concerns. Kids First!
